Saint Aygulf

- History and heritage:

Fréjus or Forum Julii was a Roman city founded by Julius Caesar in 49 as well as a military port, the town offers a rich historical and architectural heritage, it is dotted with monuments such as the amphitheater, the Roman theater, the golden door, the lantern of Augustus, the Porte des Gaulles and the aqueduct.

Saint Aygulf was called "Villepey" by the Romans, it was not until the 18th century that the town was renamed, in memory of the abbot Saint-Aygulfe, abbot of Lérins in the 7th century, a legend said that after his death, the boat which brought back his body would have washed uu on the coast of Saint-Aygulf. A feast celebrating Saint-Aygulf takes place every first weekend in September. The Saint Aygulf area was developped enormously at the end of the 19th century thanks to the acquisition of 200 hectares by the coastal company.

Guy de Maupassant relates it in his work "on the water".
